Classic fieldwork

Drilling & sampling: reliable field data starts in the field

Accurate field execution forms the foundation of any reliable soil and groundwater investigation. Our Drilling & Sampling teams carry out professional fieldwork and deliver high-quality, representative data for environmental investigations and remediation projects.

With many years of experience and extensive technical expertise, our field specialists ensure correct logging, sampling and handling of soil and groundwater, always in full compliance with applicable procedures and health and safety requirements.

Experienced field crews

The Drilling & Sampling group operates four to five field crews on a daily basis. Each crew combines technical knowledge, hands-on experience and a strong focus on safety and quality.

Daily activities include:

  • Manual and mechanical drilling with soil description and field logging in accordance with standard procedures
  • Installation of monitoring wells
  • Groundwater sampling
  • In-situ measurements
  • Infiltration testing
  • Asbestos investigations
  • Sediment and sludge sampling
  • Accurate surveying (dGPS)
  • Air sampling

Our teams work efficiently and flexibly, both for standalone site investigations and in support of High-Resolution Site Characterisation (HRSC) projects.

Equipment & logistical capacity

Our field crews operate a comprehensive and modern fleet, enabling us to respond flexibly and efficiently to a wide range of field assignments.

Vehicles for manual drilling (2)

Equipped for a broad range of techniques, including:

  • Manual soil augering
  • Window sampling
  • Percussion drilling with casing

The vans are fitted with all necessary support and safety equipment, including concrete and percussion drills, generator, cable locator, laser level, water tank, piezometers, filter gravel and bentonite, digital field logging via tablets, PID meters and refrigerated storage for samples.

Mechanical drilling units (2 trucks)

Mechanical drilling is carried out using Geoprobe rigs (6620DT and 6712DT – low clearance).

Capabilities include:

  • Direct Push drilling
  • Undisturbed soil sampling (dual tube with liner)
  • Installation of monitoring wells
  • Hollow- or solid-stem auger drilling with the 6620DT

This configuration allows for both standard site investigations and specialised applications, including work at sites with restricted headroom.

Groundwater sampling vehicles (3)

Specifically equipped for groundwater monitoring and sampling, including:

  • Pumps and purging equipment
  • Field meters for EC, pH, O₂, redox and turbidity
  • PID and water probes, including multi-phase measurement
  • Sample containers and refrigerated storage
  • Tanks for collection of contaminated purge water

Additional logistics

  • Pickup truck with trailer to support drilling crews or specific assignments
  • Small boat for sediment investigation and sampling

This extensive logistical capacity enables multiple field campaigns to be carried out simultaneously and efficiently.
